Variable Leaf Water Milfoil Draw-down Removal
Attention Higley Flow/ Racquette River Community Members
If you live along the Raquette River or play there you can help!
Variable-leaf water-milfoil is spreading in the Raquette River/Higley Flow in Colton, NY. From September 11th through September 15th, Community members will gather during a water drawdown om the Raquette River to manually remove the plant. It’s a fun way to engage with the community and enhance the stewardship of this beautiful river-plus its an excuse to play in the mud!
Variable-leaf water-milfoil is an invasive aquatic plant that can quickly take over a waterbody causing negative impacts on wildlife and recreation.
The plant has been noted in the River in these locations: Cottage Road, Sugarbush Lane and a large patch near McEwen Point. Volunteers will also be looking at areas around what community members refer to as the “old beach”.Clearing your own beach and any other areas near you is encouraged. Organizers have mesh bags and boogie boards that they will gladly deliver to help your removal efforts.
