SUMMARY:Spotted Lanternfly & Tree of Heaven Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Finger Lakes & St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario PRISMs August 21\, 2026\, 5:30–7:30 PM Green Lakes State Park 7900 Green Lakes Road\, Fayetteville\, NY 13066. Participants should register to receive important meeting information and instructions for setting up community science tools.  \nAbout the Workshop  \nThe Finger Lakes and St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario (SLELO) PRISMs invite community members to an engaging\, hands‑on workshop focused on identifying\, reporting\, and preventing the spread of the spotted lanternfly (SLF). This invasive insect poses ecological and economic threats across New York State.  \nAlthough SLF has not yet been detected in the SLELO region—including Oneida\, Oswego\, Jefferson\, Lewis\, and St. Lawrence Counties—it is confirmed in Syracuse\, directly bordering the region. This workshop empowers residents to recognize and report SLF to enhance state-wide early detection efforts. \nAbout the Spotted Lanternfly (SLF)  \nThe spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is an invasive planthopper that feeds on more than 70 plant species. Its preferred host is the tree of heaven (TOH)—itself an invasive species. SLF threatens:  \n\nEcological health by weakening native trees and forest systems \n\n\nAgriculture & economy by damaging vineyards\, orchards\, hops\, and hardwoods \n\n\nQuality of life through swarming behavior\, sticky honeydew\, and sooty mold buildup \n\nSLF is established in several regions of New York State\, with active monitoring and containment underway.  \nWhat You’ll Learn  \n\nHow to identify SLF at all life stages \n\n\nHow to identify TOH\, its preferred host \n\n\nCurrent SLF distribution in New York State \n\n\nHow to report sightings using iMapInvasives Survey123 \n\n\nHow to join early detection efforts by adopting public areas to monitor for SLF and TOH \n\nEvent Details  \n\nWhat: Spotted Lanternfly Identification & Reporting Workshop \n\n\nWhen: August 21\, 2026 \n\n\nTime: 5:30–7:30 PM \n\n\nWhere: Green Lakes State Park\, 7900 Green Lakes Road\, Fayetteville\, NY 13066 \n\n\nHosted by: Finger Lakes PRISM & St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario (SLELO) PRISM \n\n
