DESCRIPTION:Calling all partners! SLELO PRISM is interested in collaborating on a region-wide BioBlitz we’ve named NNYBioBlitz26! \nWhat is a Bioblitz ? \nThe term is a combination of “bio” (life) and “blitz” (a quick\, intense  efforts). It can be described as an intensive\, short-term event where scientists\, naturalists\, and community volunteers work together to find and identify as many species as possible in a specific area and period of time. Its primary goal is to create a “snapshot” of local biodiversity while engaging the public in hands-on conservation and scientific discovery. \nHow Partners Can Collaborate:\nWhen:  \n\nHold your event between June-August of 2026.\n\nOf particular interest are events held during June 8th-14th in observance of New York Invasive Species Awareness Week (NYISAW).\n\n\n\nWhere:  \n\nRegional partners should hold events within or bordering the five counties of Oneida\, Oswego\, Jefferson\, Lewis\, and St. Lawrence\, New York.\nCanadian partners are welcome to participate and should hold events in areas within or bordering the Eastern Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River region.\n\n\n \nCollecting Data:  \n\n\n\niNaturalist will be used to record and query data.\nHosts should create a “Collections Project” in iNaturalist (start a project\, get details).’\nIf you don’t want to make your own iNaturalist project\, join the SLELO PRISM Bioblitz26 Project and record your data to that instead. Instructions on how to join a project.\nAll projects will be added to the  iNaturalist Umbrella Project titled “NNYBioblitz26.”\n\n\n\nSign-Up to Participate:  \n\nFill out the form below to indicate your interest in participating.\nSubmitted events will be showcased on this webpage to help promote them.\n\nBioblitz Interest Form\nPlease fill out the form to indicate your interest in hosting a bioblitz. SUMMARY:Roots of Renewal: Biodiversity & Habitat Enhancement (BHE) Project Events
DESCRIPTION:The Roots of Renewal: Biodiversity and Habitat Enhancement (BHE) Project aims to create ecologically functioning habitats that support pollinators and enhance biodiversity in urban landscapes the St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario region. BHE supports regional efforts to restore habitats\, increase climate adaptability\, and protect native ecosystems from encroaching invasive species.  \nThe project is hosted by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County with support from the St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management. Through this collaboration\, five sites have been selected to create demonstration gardens to enhance native biodiversity and habitat. To raise awareness of the BHE project and foster community engagement\, two webinars and five planting events are open to the public to attend. \nEvents Overview:  \nWebinars: Register to receive Zoom link. \n4/30\, 6:30 PM- 8 PM: Cultivating Biodiversity & Habitat. Presented by\, Cierra Williams\, CCE Jefferson. Gain an overview of the BHE Project and learn about native plants you can use to support wildlife on your own property.  \n5/28\, 6:30 PM- 8 PM: Invasive Species 101 Empowering Gardeners: Presented by\, Megan Pistolese-Shaw\, SLELO PRISM. Learn to identify and manage common yard invasives\, discover beneficial native alternatives\, and master control techniques. This session includes practical training on using community science tools iMapInvasives\, iNaturalist\, and Seek to track and report species; participants are encouraged to create user accounts and download the mobile apps for each of these tools.  \nPublic Planting Events: Beginning at 10 AM and lasting up to 3-4 hours depending on needs. SUMMARY:Yellow Iris Pull at Chippewa Bay Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join our partners at TILT for a hands-on conservation effort at Chippewa Bay Preserve! On May 19 from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM\, TILT is hosting a Yellow Iris Pull to help protect the preserve’s wetlands from invasive species. \nYellow Iris may look pretty\, but it spreads aggressively and can crowd out native plants that wildlife depend on. Volunteers will work together to carefully remove this invasive plant from wetland areas\, helping restore the natural balance of the ecosystem. \nCome ready to get a little muddy\, learn about invasive species management\, and make a direct impact on the health of Chippewa Bay Preserve. Please wear muck boots or rain boots. \nPlease register by clicking the link\, or by calling the TILT office at 315-686-5345\, or emailing dmcilrath@tilandtrust.org.

SUMMARY:Water Chestnut Pulls
DESCRIPTION:Join water chestnut removal efforts occurring in the SLELO region. Water chestnut (Trapa natans) is an invasive aquatic plant that grows thick\, dense\, floating mats that impede aquatic recreation\, reduce waterfront property values\, and alter aquatic ecosystems. Water chestnut populations can be suppressed through manual removals of their floating rosette and nutlets. \nWhat to Expect: Using a kayak or canoe to paddle around a given area to collect the floating rosettes and nutlets of water chestnut and bring them ashore to be disposed of. \n\nIf you plan to host a water chesnut pull in the SLELO region\, please contact megan.pistolese@tnc.org. Help capture state-wide water chestnut control efforts and report pre- and post-treatment data to iMapInvasives.org.
