SUMMARY:A Call to Action for Ash Tree Conservation and Resistance Breeding Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 11\, 2020 | 1:00 – 2:15pm ET \nAsh tree species in North America are under mortal threat from the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)\, now in 35 states and five Canadian provinces.  There are ongoing efforts to conserve this native tree species by producing genetically diverse\, resistant seedlings suitable for restoring ash on the landscape.  Identifying “lingering ash” is a critical component of amplifying these efforts\, and this presentation will explain the narrow window of time in which urgent actions are needed to discover and preserve these individuals.  Once identified\, these trees can be replicated through grafting for further testing.  Trees that are shown to have some level of resistance can be used as parents in conservation breeding programs.  Kathleen Knight and Jennifer Koch of the USDA Forest Service will review EAB and ash tree mortality from an ecological perspective and report on the breeding program and latest results.  Jonathan Rosenthal of the Ecological Research Institute will share a model training program\, based on their results\, to find and collect materials critical for breeding resistance into the ash tree population. \n  \n\n\n\n This webinar is open to all. \nSeeking 1.25 CEU with the International Society of Arboriculture. Check the USDA Forest website for updates and to watch recordings of previous Urban Forest Connection webinars \nContact the Urban Forest Technology & Science Delivery Team at SM.FS.urban@usda.gov with questions\, feedback\, requests for special accommodations\, or speaker suggestions.  To receive future webinar notices and announcements\, sign up for mailing list. SUMMARY:Invasive Bark and Ambrosia Beetles: Their Impacts and Detection
DESCRIPTION:April 15th @2PM Register \nPresented by: Robert (Bob) Rabaglia\, USDA – Forest Service \nBark and ambrosia beetles are one of the most commonly intercepted groups of insects at US ports\, and one of the most commonly established non-native species across the country. Although most of the more than 60 species of non-native bark and ambrosia beetles established in the US are not severely impacting US forests and trees\, some species have had significant impacts. This webinar will highlight some of these species\, and discuss what they have in common. The US Forest Service program of early detection of these potentially damaging species will also be discussed. \nRobert (Bob) Rabaglia is currently National Entomologist for US Forest Service\, Forest Health Protection in Washington DC.  He has been with the Forest Service since 2005 and coordinates national forest insect projects across the country.  He coordinates national funding and policy for projects such as\, early detection/rapid response\, gypsy moth\, southern pine beetle and hemlock woolly adelgid. Prior to joining the Forest Service\, he was forest entomologist in Maryland for 18 years. He received his MS and PhD degrees in entomology from the State University of New York\, College of Environmental Science & Forestry in Syracuse\, NY. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Potential Biological Control Agents Matched for Invasive Hydrilla Biotypes in the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Webinar hosted by the Great Lakes Hydrilla Collaborative \nWhen:  May 12th at 3:00 pm EST. \nRegister: http://hydrillacollaborative.com/Home/Webinars \nPresenter: Matt Purcell\, Director of the USDA ARS Australian Biological Control Laboratory\, will provide an overview of those survey efforts and will discuss several insect species that are being evaluated to determine their potential effectiveness as biological control agents for U.S. invasive hydrilla. \nDescription: Biological control agents introduced into the U.S. for the control of invasive hydrilla have been partially effective and new agents are needed\, especially those adapted to cooler climates and environments. Since 2014\, extensive surveys of hydrilla have been conducted in Asia\, particularly China and the Republic of Korea\, where the U.S. introductions were thought to have originated. Samples were genetically characterized to identify matches with the three invasive U.S. introductions; separate dioecious and monoecious introductions last century and the more recent detection in the Connecticut River. Sites have been identified where each of these three distinct genotypes occur and include both monoecious and dioecious biotypes.  Surveys have been conducted at these sites to identify and collect herbivores to be evaluated as biological control agents.
