SUMMARY:Spotted Lanternfly Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Attention all Maple Producers and Foresters & Growers of Hops\, Vineyards\, Tree Fruits & Nut Trees\nSpotted Lanternfly is an invasive species posing a new threat to NY’s forests\, as well as our agricultural & tourist industries  \n  \nSpotted Lanternfly (SLF)\, Lycorma delicatula\, is an invasive insect native to China\, India\, Vietnam. SLF was first discovered in Pennsylvania in 2014 and have since been detected in New Jersey\, Delaware\, Virginia\, Maryland\, Massachusetts\, and Connecticut (here’s an updated list). In New York\, dead insects have been detected in Delaware\, Albany\, Monroe\, Yates\, Suffolk\, Kings\, New York\, Chemung\, and Westchester counties. Following the reports\, DEC and Department of Agriculture and Markets (DAM) staff immediately began extensive surveys throughout the area. At this time\, no additional insects have been found. \nSLF has a high spread potential. Therefore\, early detection of this invasive crop and forest pest vital. \nSLF  pose a serious threat to agricultural crops especially\, hops\, vineyards\, tree fruits\, nut trees\, and maples.  SLF also reduce the quality of life for people living in heavily infested areas as the insect excretes a thick honeydew that makes outdoor recreation extremely unpleasant. \nThe St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO PRISM)  & the St. Lawrence Cornell Cooperative Extension are hosting a workshop to inform the public about the threats SLF pose to our region. Growers of hops\, vineyards\, tree fruits\, nut trees\, and maples are strongly encouraged to attend. The workshop will be held on Wednesday\, March 13th from 1-4pm at the Constantia Town Hall Located at 14 Frederick Street Constantia NY. The workshop is free and open to the public. Stacie will present on the park’s invasive species check stations which target boater outreach\, as well as coordination with Ohio agencies for the management of hydrilla on that side of the 17\,000-acre reservoir. DESCRIPTION:Help the NYS Hemlock Initiative\n \nSurvey for HWA Biocontrol Establishment at High Tor WMA. The New York State Hemlock Initiative is seeking volunteers to assist with a survey for biological control establishment at the High Tor Wildlife Management Area on Friday\, November 9th at 11:00 am.  \nLaricobius nigrinus (aka “Little Larry”) was released at High Tor as a predatory insect to help control the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid population that has been found in the area. This survey will help researchers gauge the success of the release and establishment of the predatory beetle. The survey will be led by Nick Dietschler\, Research Technician with the NYS Hemlock Initiative. Nick will train volunteers on the survey method\, provide background on the biocontrols\, and will be available to answer questions. \nMeet at the Parish Glen / Conklin Gully parking on Route 245 at 11:00 am. To reduce liability issues and costs associated with EAB\, the Village of Canton is undergoing an ash tree removal and alternative tree planting initiative. A workshop to teach the proper way to plant a tree\, along with information about EAB will be hosted by the St. Lawrence County Soil& Water Conservation District and the Cornell Cooperative Extension along with the Village of Canton.
