The primary methods of swallow-wort control at Whele State Park are mowing and mechanical removal. Partners continue to organize “pod pulls” to remove pods before seeds develop. They will also set up experimental plots and mechanically remove whole swallow-wort plants.
Fort Drum has identified 21 invasive species of concern. Most occur directly on Fort Drum property, others are at risk of encroachment from surrounding areas. Major efforts have been placed on attempts to eradicate black swallow-wort on the installation. To date, 6.12 acres of swallow-wort were mapped and all of it has been treated with herbicide at least once. For more information on this and other initiatives, download the Fort Drum Invasive Species Management Fact Sheet.
